Google Place Api Pricing

Published 3 min readMarkdown

The Google Places API is part of the Google Maps Platform, designed to help developers access detailed information about locations such as businesses, landmarks, addresses, and geographic coordinates. Like most Google APIs, its pricing follows a pay-as-you-go model, meaning you are charged based on the number of requests you make. To make things simpler, Google offers different pricing tiers: Essentials, Pro, and Enterprise. Each tier comes with its own free monthly quota, after which charges apply.

Essentials Tier

The Essentials plan is often the starting point for most developers. Globally, it offers 10,000 free requests per month for each API SKU. In India, this quota is even higher at 70,000 free requests. After you exhaust the free quota, charges apply per 1,000 requests.

  • Autocomplete Requests cost around $2.83 per 1,000 globally but are much lower in India, starting at $0.85 per 1,000.

  • Geocoding, Geolocation, Place Details, and Time Zone requests are billed at around $5 per 1,000 globally, with Indian rates closer to $1.50 per 1,000.

  • Places UI Kit requests are cheaper, beginning at about $1 per 1,000 globally and $0.30 in India.

This tier is cost-effective for small to medium applications that primarily use location search or place details.

Pro Tier

The Pro plan is built for applications that need more advanced capabilities like richer Place Details, Nearby Search, and Text Search. The free quota here is 5,000 calls per SKU per month.

  • Address Validation and Place Details typically start around $17 per 1,000 requests globally, with reduced Indian pricing beginning near $5.10.

  • Nearby Search and Text Search are more expensive, costing about $32 per 1,000 requests globally but just $9.60 per 1,000 in India.

  • Aggregate Pro requests are lower, averaging $10 globally and $3 in India per 1,000 requests.

This plan is better suited for larger applications where users frequently search for businesses, services, or locations around them.

Enterprise Tier

The Enterprise plan is tailored for high-end use cases such as global-scale apps, marketplaces, or apps that need highly detailed data including photos, atmosphere, and advanced Place Details. The free quota here is only 1,000 requests per SKU per month.

  • Place Details Enterprise costs about $20 per 1,000 globally, but Indian rates begin at $6 per 1,000.

  • Nearby Search Enterprise is priced at $35 per 1,000 globally and $10.50 in India.

  • Requests for atmosphere data or photos are also billed, generally ranging between $2 to $12 per 1,000 depending on the data type.

While this tier is expensive, it is necessary for enterprise-level apps with millions of active users.

Important Billing Details

  • Autocomplete charges can vary depending on whether you use session tokens. Without them, every keystroke may trigger a request, which can quickly increase costs. With tokens, multiple queries within one session are grouped, making it much cheaper.

  • Place Details requests are billed based on the fields you select. Asking for fewer fields (like just name and address) costs less than retrieving every possible detail.

  • Find Place and Text Search queries can get expensive if not optimized. Developers are encouraged to use filters and only request necessary information.

Developer Experiences

Many developers report unexpectedly high bills because they did not optimize their requests. For example, leaving an application running in development mode without limits can generate thousands of unnecessary requests. Common solutions include debouncing search inputs, setting a minimum character length before sending queries, and monitoring usage through Google Cloud’s billing console.

Summary

Google Places API pricing is flexible but can quickly add up if requests are not carefully managed. Essentials tier works best for smaller apps, Pro tier fits mid to large-scale applications, and Enterprise tier is designed for heavy enterprise usage. Developers in India benefit from larger free quotas and lower pricing compared to global rates. To manage costs effectively, always use session tokens for Autocomplete, limit Place Details fields to only what you need, and monitor your request volumes closely.
